Grandfathers of SEO - Lou Person

It amazes me what the Search Engine Optimization industry has become. We were right there from Jump Street (back in 1994), the start of that industry before anyone even knew it was an industry. I missed it. There are many that consider themselves “experts” in this industry, and to their credit they probably are, but on the other hand, they are amateurs when it comes to the likes of David Goldin, David Jonas and Scott Hoffman.

Way back in the day, around 1994, we had a company together called Media Connection of New York. I wasn't sure if it was Goldin or Hoffman that came up with the idea, but I remember it going something like this “Dude, I just spoke to some guy who says for $15,000 he can get us to the top of the search engine he’s got some secret algorithm”.

Over the years I’ve often been humbled by how little I know about things, but back in 1994, I thought if I could compile an apache server and hack a perl script, I knew everything. I don’t remember what I said at the time, but it was probably something like “That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard what a ridiculous scam”.

I had to eat those words pretty hard a few weeks later. I don’t recall the exact chain of events, but I’ll never forget the looks. The looks I received from Goldin and Hoffman when we received a Letter of Intent to purchase our company for something like 100X earnings.

Someone asked the publicly traded company who wound up purchasing us “How did you find us” and the response was “You were the first ones we called because you came up first in the search results”. So for all the respected Internet Marketers out there you might be smart and cutting edge, but you aren't original.

That title can only be claimed by David Goldin, David Jonas and Scott Hoffman.
